Gives the impression that the surroundings were always covered with a grassy savanna of Sahelian origin. 3%. To verify these findings pollen deposition on the desert surface was studied with the filter method at intervals of one degree latitude between 34 and 20° N. 000/m 2 A typical gradient in the occurrence of pollen types showed that in the traverse from north to south the mediterranean pollen was replaced gradually by Sahelian and tropical sporomorphs. In the hyper-arid Tanezrouft in the region of the Tropic of Cancer where at present no vegetation occurs the pollen sediments give the picture of a complex vegetation cover of grass steppe and savanna.

Ines Hurtado and Margalit Riegler-Guihman. Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Cientificas, Centro de Microbiologia y Biologia Celular, Laboratorio de Alergia Experimental, Caracas, Venezuela. Our studies on the air-spora are intended as an aid for the diagnosis and treatment of allergic conditions in the tropics. Our air samplers operate at the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research, in a suburban area of Caracas.

This important finding proves that the upper forest limit was lowered by at least 700 m, but more likely by 1000-1100 m during the last glacial maximum. 8°C depending on the lapse rate used for the computation. Indications are that the climate was dry during this cold period. The fossil pollen zone following this cold period shows a varying presence of trees with moderate and low export abilities indicating that they definitely grew round the lake. At the same time elements of the Ericaceous This Belt were decreasing in number and rainfall was apparently high.
