Iv) Reducing aromatics content reduces NOx emissions from the noncatalyst-equipped cars, most probably due to an effect on peak combustion temperature, but increases NOx emissions from catalyst-equipped cars, due to reduced catalyst efficiency. Figures 2 and 3 show the car-to-car variability of tail pipe regulated emissions performance, a feature masked by fleet averaging. Variability arises not only in the absolute values of emission levels but also in the response to fuel property changes. The effects of gasoline sulfur on the capacity of the three-way catalyst to control regulated emissions was one of the issues highlighted by the AQIRP programme in which fleet-averaged effects of fuel sulfur were found to be detrimental to the catalytic removal of all three pollutants (VOC, NOx and air toxics).
